Snow!

So there’s tons of snow here in the hometown. So much so that the greater metro area is almost completely shut down. Right now theres about 12″ of powder snow, covered by a 1/2″ sheet of ice, which in turn is buried beneath a similar amount of snow.

The most difficult part about walking in all this is that each and every footstep is going to break through ice, but just barely; there’s no margin to move your feelt, all the way up to your shins. Each time I lost my balance I felt that I might lose my legs with it.

Any car that is smart enough to not be driving out in this wonderful spring weather is currently in hiding. Not due to any particiular choice car’s or car owner’s part, but because that much snow piling on a car tends to… conceal things a bit. A particularly unfortunate VW bug (millenium edition) can only be identified by its distinct yellow fenders; appearing breifly just barely under one pile of snow, and just above another. It makes quite the fine impersenation of an igloo.

With extra time on my hands, and nowhere to go, my friends and I needed to be creative. Last Friday we had a Lord of the Rings marathon, in which, as it sounds, the goal was to watch all three LotR movies consecutively, back to back, without breaks. We had pizza and willing fans, but what I lacked was sleep. I made it to somewhere between 1 and 2:00 AM; a little over halfway through the two towers. Out of all of us, apparently only Craig managed to stay away to the end. What a trooper. I eventually decided that since I was asleep, and was going to continue doing so, that I may as well sleep in my bed rather than a couch. So I did. Huzzah for dark-o-clock dental appointments. I’m pretty sure I could have survied longer if I had more than 5 hrs sleep the night before.

My friends Quill and Barry are fortunately within walking distance of my place. Thanks to this inclement weather we were able to have an inordinate number of game nights as of late. I introduced them to the Seafarers of Cataan, which is an expansion to the Settlers of Cataan game. In this version, much more emphasis is placed upon exploration of new territory, and sheep are finally made useful for things other than converting them into other things (hint: you can’t make a boat without breaking a few sheep). We’ve also been able to watch a number of high quality cinematic works, such as Ong Bak: the Thai Warrior which is the best martial arts movie you’ll ever see featuring Muy Thai and never using wires. Direction was amazing and I really need to review the film soon, or at least convince others to see it.

I enjoyed making the review of Torg (the game) so much that I’m planning to do more game reviews in the future, possibly branching into actually reviewing the game instead if reminiscing constantly about pogs.

Meanwhile, until next time, watch out for frostbite!
