I found this posting that I thought was eaten by the internet whilst I was in San Fransisco. Here it is in its original glory:

Train ride from Portland to Emryville was fairly smooth, though at 17 hours it was still a bit tiring. However, unlike an airplane, there were in-transit meals that were actually pretty good, and there was an observation car where you could hang out if you didn’t want to sit down all of the time. I’m off to the the higher ed web development conference in Springfield, Missouri. Plane rides went just fine and nothing particularly outstanding has happened so far.

During the ride I was powerlevling my party in FF3 because the game designers saw it fit that by the time you got to the final dungeon, you would be just fine for facing the local monsters, but would have to go to a point at which you could not save before fighting the worst boss in the world and you would also be about 10 levels below what could be considered even remotely survivable by ordinary human beings.
